All About Me

Hi! My name is Jered Borup and I will be your instructor this semester. The following is just a little information so that you can get to know me better and I look forward to getting to know you as we work together. 

My Professional Self

• I'm an assistant professor in the Division of Learning Technologies. 
• I've taught online and blended courses since 2008 years 
• I taught social studies for six years in an Idaho junior high school. Interestingly, they converted the school into a high tech high school that is based on problem based learning. I visited the school during the holidays and I could hardly recognize it. Things are a changing! 
• I got my Master's in Secondary Education from Idaho State University. 
• In 2013 I finished my Ph.D. in Instructional Psychology and Technology from Brigham Young University. 
• My research focuses on building K-12 online learning communities and student support systems. 
• I've given over 20 workshops and presentations to Fairfax County Public Schools teachers and administrators.

My Personal Self

I'm a proud papa to two girls and lucky husband to Pam. More about our adventures can be found on Pam's family blog: http://theborups.blogspot.com/ . Pam has also started to create videos that I love! The following video is from our most recent trip to NYC.

 

Here's a little more about myself:

• I grew up in a small Utah town with about 2,000 people and no stoplights (98 students were in my graduating class). Footloose was actually filmed pretty close to where I lived. 
• My wife, Pam, is a vegetarian so if you ever see me eating out, there's a good chance that I will be eating a hamburger. However, recently she started eating chicken so there's hope! 
• There are a lot of teachers in my family. My Grandmother taught in a one-room schoolhouse, my mom taught high school English, my dad taught sociology and statistics at Weber State University, my mother-in-law teaches 2nd grade, and my brother teaches 9th grade English. Education is very important to my family and I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. 
• I'm 6'8" or two standard deviations from the mean for any statistics folks out there. As a result, I've either played or coached basketball most of my life. It's funny because here people associate being tall with playing basketball. However, I lived in Portugal for a while and there they associate being tall with picking figs. I have to say I would rather have people telling me "I bet you're good at basketball" than "I bet you're a great fig picker." Although there are benefits to being tall, this video highlights a few drawbacks.
